A new tool has been launched to aid the recruitment of more tech companies in the Tampa Bay area. A group of local economic development leaders, investors and executives from companies like Embarc Collective, Strategic Property Partners, Florida Funders, and startups like Drift launched HiTampaBay.com to help relocating tech companies with information about the positives of the local area and access to tech-related news. General Partner of Florida Funders Marc Blumenthal said the idea had sparked “months ago”, and came about when he realised there wasn’t a single entity that was responsible for spreading good news about tech in Tampa, and helping new and relocating tech companies settle in.
The University of South Florida has been awarded $1.2 million for UMatter, which the university’s website says is an ‘innovative, inclusive, postsecondary education program in the USF College of Education created to provide young people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to experience higher education and campus life.’ The gift was courtesy of Andrew and Eileen Hafer, and the program will be named after them. It will fund the program’s operations and initiatives for the students.
Visit Florida has announced that it will ask Florida legislature for $75 million to increase funding and extend the expiration of the agency, which is currently planned for October 1st 2023. The organization said that they require the funding in order to ‘continue the momentum’ it had enjoyed during its post-pandemic recovery.
Tampa-based HOMEE, a platform that connects insurers, policyholders and skilled service providers in the claims process, has announced that it has closed its Series B-2 financing with $17 million, leaving total capital raised during the B rounds at $36 million. The company has enjoyed record financial results during the first half of this year, due to an increase in claims being filed. The funding round was led by Morningside. Investment Manager Mick Sawka said “we are excited to invest in HOMEE, and we believe their technology platform and team will continue to solve the key industry challenges”.
A new entrepreneur center has been opened at Sarasota College, and it’s hoped it will “do more than help entrepreneurs and businesspeople,” according to Kim Richmond, the director of the program. The center, which cost $4.4 million, is 40,000 square feet and spans two floors. It will offer seven services, including a coding academy, and a creative studio that has a 2000-square-foot video production space. It will be open to the public as well as students, and will offer free and fee-based courses. Richmond went on to say, “we want to build business here, and build the people that build them.”
Residents of Tampa will have direct access to Europe from December, when the Lufthansa Group’s new leisure airline Eurowings Discover begins operating flights to and from Frankfurt. The service will operate four times a week, and is Eurowings’ first flight to the states, showing how important Tampa Bay really is. TPA’s Director of Air Service Development, Alex Heiter, said “we are excited that Lufthansa Group and Eurowings Discover has chosen TPA as its first U.S. route,” adding that the decision reaffirmed “the Tampa Bay area’s attractiveness for international visitors”.
