Record Breaking Tampa
The sale of an estate in Lakefront Polk County has set a sales record, according to the realtor, Premier Sotheby’s International Realty. The 9,215-square-foot property in Auburndale sold for $4.1 million. Representing the buyer and seller, Louise Richer of Premier Sotheby’s said the deal would “go down in Polk County’s real estate history.” The sale included the estate’s 44 acres of land, 2,300 feet of water-frontage, tennis courts and swimming pool.
Tampa Electric has announced another piece of exciting, record-breaking news: its Manatee Viewing Center in Hillsborough County has hosted 1,100 manatees at one time, beating its previous record of 850. As explained on the Viewing Center website, the manatees are attracted to warm water, which Tampa Electric is able to supply in abundance. Its Big Bend Power Station, Apollo Beach, “circulates water from Tampa Bay for cooling, then sends the water flowing clean and warm back into the bay.” It acts as a refuge for the manatees during colder winter months.
Innovation in Tampa Bay
The Tampa Bay Innovation Center is working on its next startup accelerator, focusing on technology that will aid in the climate crisis, as well as sustainability and resilience. The Innovation Center aims to “connect young companies with capital and coaching” helping get “companies off the ground and on the maps.” This latest endeavor sees the Center urging new tech companies to apply to work with them, promising to “prepare [the] company not to just “look ready” but to “be ready” to attract revenue”. As the climate crisis continues, the Center will look to focus its efforts on recycling, ‘smart cities’, transportation, renewable energy and sustainability awareness. This will be the Center’s eighth cohort.
Becker’s Hospital Review, “the leading hospital magazine for hospital business news and analysis for hospital and healthcare system executives”, has named Stacey Brandt, executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Tampa General Hospital, one of 60 “Hospital and Health System Chief Marketing Officers to Know in 2023”. The magazine wrote that it’s “thrilled to honor” those on the list, and described them as “bold strategic leaders” who “drive planning and execution of marketing and communications initiatives for their organizations.” Ms Brandt was the only chief marketing officer in the region to be included on the list.
Business Development Continues
A new, nonstop route from Tampa International Airport to Orange County, California, will begin in May, courtesy of Breeze Airways. In a press release, Tampa International announced its ‘first-ever nonstop service’ to John Wayne airport, as well as a route to Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina. In the release, the airport mentioned Orange County’s population of 3 million, and how it draws tourists in with its great surfing spots, as well as Disneyland and other attractions. Both the OC and S.C. routes will use Breeze’s Airbus A220-300 aircraft. TPA CEO Joe Lopano added that “Breeze continues to expand Tampa Bay’s access to key destinations across the U.S.”
A Tampa-based company, Inversa, is making use of one of the region’s most invasive species, protecting the local environment and making some very trendy wallets and handbags at the same time. The company, which was founded during the pandemic, identified the threat from non-native lionfish, which can destroy coral reefs and harm local fish populations. Co-founders Aarav Chavda, Roland Salatino and Kahan Chavda are all keen scuba divers. CEO Aarav Chavda explained that “invasive species are one of the biggest under-recognized problems on the planet”. According to a 2023 report, they cost the global economy $423 billion a year. Inversa offers a range of items in ‘lionfish leather’.
