Tampa Keeps On Getting Better
Aeromexico and Tampa International Airport recently celebrated the airline’s first nonstop flight to Mexico City from TPA on July 1. According to a press release, this is the first time in almost 30 years that an airline has run a service from TPA to Mexico’s capital. It’s predicted that the route will generate “nearly $70 million in economic impact for the Tampa Bay region.” TPA CEO Joe Lopano said: “It’s a big day when we get to announce both a new airline and a new route that connects Tampa Bay with the largest metropolitan area in North America.”
In other air travel news, Breeze Airways has added a service from TPA to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Airport, bringing travel time down from the four and a half hours it takes with a connection, to two hours 45 minutes for this direct flight. This service builds on the several added in recent months, including routes to Orange County, California and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Breeze President Tom Doxey explained: “All of these routes and cities are a perfect example of how Breeze’s premium leisure low-cost product has found its footing with great routes and added affordability and convenience.”
Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium has ranked 8th of 50 stadiums worldwide in terms of gross concert sales. According to Pollstar, which provides up-to-date data regarding the global concert industry and recently released its rankings, Ray J Stadium is also number one in the United States so far in the first half of the year. Pollstar reported that the stadium has sold 115,069 tickets this year, which led to a total of $23,856,249. Concerts from Sting and Billy Joel have almost certainly helped boost numbers. Last year was record breaking for the stadium, with Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé and Luke Combs all appearing.
Employers from Tampa are among the 12 on Florida’s Gulf Coast that have been voted as the top places to work in the country. According to Inc. Magazine’s Best Workplaces of 2024 list, seven Tampa companies made the cut. Companies need to apply to be eligible for the list, and must give examples of how they connect with their employees. For instance, S-One Holdings of Sarasota offers enrichment opportunities to its employees through its education program.
Business Developments in Tampa Bay
Wright’s Gourmet House, a Tampa staple since 1963, will be changing hands from Jeff Mount, grandson of founders Marjorie and Pete Wright, to Caspers Company. The hospitality company based in Tampa has previously been a McDonald’s franchisee. According to the terms of the agreement, Mount will continue working in a transition role for the next six months. He cited Caspers’ “reputation for excellence, as well as an unwavering commitment to the community” as to why they were the ideal candidates to carry on his family’s legacy.
The tallest tower in Tampa has been sold to The Brookdale Group, a commercial real estate investment firm based in Atlanta, for $151.3 million. Located at 100 N. Tampa Street, the 42-story tower is 83% leased, and has also benefited from a recent $21 million renovation which included work on the lobby, conference and fitness centers, and the tenant lounge. Built in 1992, the building was previously bought by PGIM for $127 million in 2007.
Investing in Tampa’s Future
Pasco County’s Saint Leo University has plans to introduce a master’s degree in AI (artificial intelligence). The graduate degree in AI coursework will emphasize “experiential learning, covering subjects such as machine learning, deep learning, and analysis of algorithms.” Dr. Vyas Krishnan, associate dean of the university’s College of Computing, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Data Science (CARDS), noted that the degree would be “perfect for those who have finished a bachelor’s and want to enter the workforce with the best AI skills.” The university is designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence (NCAE) in Cybersecurity by the NSA.
A motel site in Clearwater previously referred to as “a thorn in the sides of residents and police” is going to be transformed into affordable housing. Clearwater Gardens, at 1260 Cleveland Street, will be the result of a $32 million development. Clearwater Mayor Bruce Rector said in a news release that the development “will help to transform this once-neglected site into a modern complex that will revitalize the area”. The development will feature one, two and three-bedroom-units, as well as a library, coworking space, and children’s game room.
