Unemployment claims in Florida have reached the lowest level since the pandemic began, with around 11,700 claims in total last week. This is down from over 17,000 for the week up until March 20. Since the beginning of February 2021, there have been, on average, 20,000 new claims a week in Florida. In similar news, Tampa Bay and Florida have, once again, enjoyed the best levels of employment in the country. It also boasted the best small business employment in the country.
The Memorial Hospital of Tampa is planning to open the largest adult behavioral health program in Hillsborough County. The hospital is investing $19.5 million into an expansion that will establish its Tampa Community Hospital facility. Hospital CEO Sonia Wellman, who worked as a registered nurse for many years, said they have cardiac and diabetic care “down to a science” but that “behavioral health is so fragmented”. Phase 1 includes the construction of an eight-bed emergency department dedicated to psychiatry, which is due to open in May, and phase 2, opening in summer, will increase the department’s bed count to 68.
The multiple conferences and conventions coming to Tampa Bay are expected to bring at least $75 million to the area, according to Visit Tampa Bay CEO and President Santiago Corrada. Several conferences are relocating to Tampa from other locations like Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, Reno, Nevada and Los Angeles. Attendance for the conferences are expected to be between 3,000 and 8,000. One of the most well-known conventions, ComicCon, is also expected to return to Tampa, as well as a WrestleMania 37, which could have an economic impact of over $13.6 million for the area.
Companies in Tampa Bay raised over $235 million in March, in stark contrast to the brief respite in investments in March 2020, at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Among the companies are OPSWAT, which previously relocated from Silicon Valley to Tampa, and Tampa-based Electus Global Education Co., and Tampa’s M2Gen, which is in charge of the largest research studies into cancer in the world.
