BayCare Health System has extended its contract with Tampa International Airport and will continue to provide testing for Covid-19 inside the airport into 2021. The program was started in October 2020, and TPA became the first airport in the country to offer Covid-19 tests, both the PCR and antigen types. It’s been hugely successful so far, with over 12,000 travelers having been tested, allowing them to find out whether they’re infected with the coronavirus, or if they’ve been in contact with someone who is. Airport testing not only increases passenger safety but helps bring peace of mind to travelers arriving in and leaving Tampa.
Plans are underway for health care company Lumos Diagnostics to almost double the size of its existing warehouse operations. Based in Lakewood Ranch, the company manufactures rapid diagnostic tests that focus on infectious and inflammatory diseases. It has over 40 employees and brings in $7 million annual revenue. The project developer, Stantec Consulting Services, filed plans for a two-story, 45,000-square-foot warehouse and office, connected to the current 48,000-square-foot warehouse in Lakewood Ranch Corporate Park.
While the coronavirus pandemic has brought with it devastation and a total change in lifestyle for the majority of us, it has also led to a huge increase in the number of businesses being set up. Applications for business formation in the US increased by 82% by September 2020 compared to the same time last year. The majority of these new businesses cater to this new, socially distanced world we’re living in.
Florida is one of 20 states that increased its minimum wage from January 1, up to $8.65 an hour, from the previous rate of $8.56. It’ll be increased again to $10 in September, due to a constitutional amendment passed by voters in Florida last November. Under the amendment, minimum wage in Florida will increase by $1 a year until it reaches $15 a year by 2026. Business owners who supported the increase say it will strengthen the local workforce and boost consumer spending.
It’s been decided that Tampa General Hospital will be the official medical provider and sponsor of the Super Bowl, as well as the week of events leading up to it. These events will include live music, food and drinks, sponsor activities throughout Tampa, and football-themed activities in Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park. They’ll last from January 29 until February 6, the day before the Super Bowl.
