We’re going to cover all the goings-on in the Tampa Bay area, what’s happening in the coming weeks and months, and how Ready Stays is here for your month-to-month rental needs in Tampa.
The University of Tampa’s Scholarship Endowment Fund has reached over $1 million, the school’s Board of Fellows has announced. Initially created in 2003, the fund awards a scholarship every year to a new, incoming student, who has volunteer experience and intends to major in business. Fellows have continued to donate generously to the fund through various fundraising events, and it now stands at around $1.13 million. The Board of Fellows was set up in 1971, and is made up of around 150 business professionals and leaders who work to strengthen the university’s bond with the local Tampa Bay business community. The monetary milestone comes at a critical time for the university, during which it’s enjoyed incredible momentum.
Tampa tech companies have raised a further $13 million in June, a number almost identical to the amount raised in May. One of the companies is Codeboxx, who recently opened a new office in St. Petersburg. The company offers coding bootcamps and digital workshops, specifically to those who wouldn’t normally have access to such resources, and managed to secure $1.6 million from 17 investors. Co-founder Meg Charles said they “believe a career in tech should be based on potential, not privilege.” Another company benefiting from investment over the last month is vigtec.io, a fintech business founded by Jonathan Gibbons, who also founded HR and payroll service bureau Compass HRM. Launched back in April, vigtec secured $1.5 million in their latest seed round, bringing the company’s total funding to $3 million.
In related news, a biotech company based in Tampa, Psilera Bioscience, has secured $2.5 million in funding. Its focus is on using psychedelics to treat addiction, and it has strong ties to the University of South Florida. Typically, clinical trials and drug development cost tens of millions to fund, but the company’s co-founders said that it’s still in early, and less costly, stages of testing. Co-founder Dr. Chris Witowski said there is “a lot of interest in the space”. Dr. Witowski and his fellow co-founder, Dr. Jackie von Salm, both earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of South Florida.
