Exciting Developments in Tampa Bay
In its latest examination of the country’s top cities people are moving to, Clearwater-based storage company PODS Enterprises has revealed that Sarasota very nearly reached the top of the list. Using data collected over a span of 15 months, the Florida city came in at number two, narrowly beaten by the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Wilmington, North Carolina area. In line with recent trends, most of the cities making up the top 20 are located in southern states. Florida had the most cities on the list with six locations: Sarasota, Orlando, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, Melbourne and Ocala. The report explains that “economics appears to be the largest factor in influencing consumers’ decisions to move, with low tax rates, warmer weather, and more affordable housing prices being the main motivators behind consumer choices.”
The development of a new 775-acre campus in Pasco County, Speros FL, will be overseen by two new subsidiaries created by the Moffitt Cancer Center. The new nonprofits will have two separate areas of focus; Moffitt Lifesciences Campus Management Corp. will lead development of new roads, infrastructure and leasing and management for the life science, innovation and medical campus. Moffitt Real Estate Holding Corp. will be in charge of the land holding. Moffitt has also put together a new board of directors, including Mark Metheny, who was previously an executive at Homes by WestBay. Metheny will be the vice chair of the board. Ted Couch will be secretary and treasurer, having worked on various health care, financial services and real estate boards. The company’s ambition is vast and has the potential to be very impressive. Moffitt president, CEO and doctor Patrick Hwu said he hoped the center becomes “the global epicenter for personalized oncology care and leading research.” In Latin, Speros means ‘hope’.
The city of Tampa has named Javier Marin as its new director of economic opportunity. In a release regarding the appointment, it was explained that Marin will be in charge of “ensuring all stakeholders benefit from projects initiated by, or in partnership with the city of Tampa.” Part of Tampa’s Development and Economic Opportunity department, the role involves assisting with small businesses and small business resources, and acting as the city’s liaison for economic development, tourism and trade, both foreign and local. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor stated “Javier’s extensive experience in business growth, trade, finance and non-profits makes him a great fit for this unique role.”
