Exciting Events and Updates in Tampa
A new escape room is coming to Tampa! It will be located in the $1 billion Midtown Tampa development, and is the latest site to be acquired by The Escape Game, bringing the total number of locations for the company to over 40, including three in Florida. A news release revealed that the 3,500-square-foot site will house seven “uniquely themed games” and will include ‘Prison Break’, the most difficult game on offer. According to its website, The Escape Game has “served over seven million players since 2014”. Will you be among those hoping to escape in Midtown Tampa?
An event aimed at helping budding entrepreneurs develop their ideas and pitch to potential investors is set to take place at the University of South Florida’s St. Petersburg’s Kate Tiedemann School of Business and Finance. Techstars Startup Weekend Tampa Bay will take place on March 15-17, and will allow attendees to pitch startup ideas, form into teams, and work on their business ideas over the weekend, before pitching to judges. Startup Weekend’s website promises attendees will be able to “learn how to think, work, and build like a startup in 54 thrilling hours”.
Tampa International Airport (TPA) has added yet another new nonstop service – this time to Mexico City – which will start this summer, on July 1. The route will be operated by Aeromexico. In a news release from TPA, the airport’s CEO Joe Lopano said: “We’re proud to welcome Aeromexico to TPA with this nonstop service to Mexico City and we are so grateful to our Tampa Bay community partners”. Aeromexico’s Vice President of Sales for US, Canada and Latin America, Jose Zapata, added that the airline’s customers “will have more options for leisure and business travel, and Tampa Bay has a lot to offer.”
Construction Projects
A site in Tampa that was previously home to a drive-in theater will soon be transformed into 354 affordable apartments. The Fun-Lan Drive-in movie theater had been located at the plot on East Hillsborough Avenue since 1950, but closed in December 2021. It was also home to a Swap Shop. Now, work has begun on the 519,240-square-foot development, with large portions of the units to be offered to families in the area with incomes lower than the local average. The Richman Group is running the project, receiving $12 million from the city of Tampa “to put toward construction costs.”
Tampa Bay Businesses
A Tampa-based marketing agency has merged with an Orlando video production company, after various shared projects over a 10-year period. Tampa’s Roger West Creative and Digital Brew have brought together 45 employees and over 150 clients, offering a “single award-winning source for brand development, lead generation, and content production services.” According to a news release, founder and CEO of Roger West, Michael Westafer, is now CEO of a newly-formed holding company called Roger & James, while Digital Brew founder and CEO, Michael Cardwell, will serve as President.
US Design Lab, a Tampa-based design and branding firm, is offering its expertise to malls and other spaces that may be suffering from a decline in visitors. US Design Lab, which was founded by Michele Oca, works with existing spaces that might be lacking in visitors – and revenue – and helps them develop plans to modify, improve and update, in a bid to increase customer flow and improve operational efficiency and overall profitability. It also offers branding marketing services. The company has projects across the United States, and is also working on developing a trampoline park in Bahrain.
